Close encounters of the classed kind. Again…Footnote

Pages 545-549 | Published online: 29 Aug 2012

Notes

1. I return to this title used in Working-Class Lesbian Lives: Classed Outsiders (2007) given the ongoing encounters of class.

2. During the 1984 miners' strikes, many became bitter about men who continued to work during the strike, then labelled as ‘scabs’ for crossing a picket line. In conducting fieldwork in and around ex-mining communities of the north-east of England I frequently had to take account of the no-go areas (‘scab bars’) where interviewees still refused to go.

3. English Heritage has preserved the structure of the Byker Wall estate as a national treasure, now awarded Grade II Heritage Status due to the strong design statement made by Ralph Erskine in the early 1970s.
