Coliving housing: home cultures of precarity for the new creative class

ABSTRACT

The economy is entrenched in the domestic and the domestic enables the economy. We consider this dialectical relationship between the economy and ‘home’ through a case study of coliving, a new type of privately delivered shared housing emerging in response to increasingly precarious economic conditions. We examine how the proliferation of coliving signifies shifting meanings and cultures of home for digital nomads, the latest iteration of the creative class. We draw upon a content analysis of twenty websites of coliving organisations located in New York and San Francisco, United States of America. Our analysis uncovers emergent meanings and cultures of home that are strongly associated with economic conditions. We consider how the spatial manifestations of a precarious economy are supported by new homemaking practices and imaginaries of home – what may be termed home cultures of precarity. Coliving challenges conventional meanings of home: a reprieve from work, private, secure and inhabited long term. Instead, home is a capital accumulation technology for this cohort – a site for the active production of capital. The ideal home for the new creative class is a place of work that is mobile and social. The economy, meanings of home and homemaking practices are co-productive and co-emergent.

L’économie est ancrée dans l’univers domestique, tandis que ce dernier permet l’économie. Nous étudions cette relation dialectique entre l’économie et le « chez-soi » à l’aide d’une étude sur la cohabitation, une nouvelle sorte de logement cohabitationnel privé en train de naître en réponse à la précarité croissante des conditions économiques. Nous examinons la manière dont la prolifération de cohabitations représente un changement dans les définitions et les cultures du domicile pour les nomades digitaux, la dernière incarnation de la classe créative. Nous nous appuyons sur une analyse du contenu de vingt sites internet d’associations de cohabitation à New York et San Francisco, aux États-Unis. Notre analyse révèle des définitions et des cultures du domicile nouvelles et qui sont étroitement liées aux conditions économiques. Nous examinons la manière dont les manifestations spatiales d’une économie précaire sont soutenues par de nouvelles pratiques pour créer et imaginer le domicile, ce que l’on pourrait appeler des cultures du domicile issues de la précarité. La cohabitation remet en question les définitions traditionnelles du domicile : un refuge loin du travail, privé, sûr, où l’on habite longtemps. Pour cette cohorte, le domicile est plutôt une technologie d’accumulation de capital, un endroit pour la production active de capital. Le domicile idéal pour la nouvelle classe créative est un lieu de travail mobile et communautaire. La economía está arraigada en lo doméstico y lo doméstico posibilita la economía. Consideramos esta relación dialéctica entre la economía y el ‘hogar’ a través de un estudio de caso de convivencia, un nuevo tipo de vivienda privada y compartida que surge en respuesta a condiciones económicas cada vez más precarias. Examinamos cómo la proliferación de la convivencia significa sentidos y culturas cambiantes del hogar para los nómadas digitales, la última iteración de la clase creativa. Nos basamos en un análisis de contenido de veinte sitios web de organizaciones de convivencia ubicadas en Nueva York y San Francisco, Estados Unidos de América. Nuestro análisis revela significados emergentes y culturas del hogar que están fuertemente asociadas con las condiciones económicas. Consideramos cómo las nuevas prácticas domésticas y los imaginarios del hogar apoyan las manifestaciones espaciales de una economía precaria, lo que puede denominarse culturas precarias del hogar. La convivencia desafía los significados convencionales del hogar: un refugio del trabajo, privado, seguro y habitado a largo plazo. En cambio, el hogar es una tecnología de acumulación de capital para esta cohorte, un sitio para la producción activa de capital. El hogar ideal para la nueva clase creativa es un lugar de trabajo móvil y social. La economía, los significados de las prácticas domésticas y domésticas son co-productivos y co-emergentes.
