Making visible the Chicagoland suburban healthcare landscape of latina women: a qualitative GIS approach

ABSTRACT

How accessible is linguistically-appropriate health care to Latina women in demographically shifting suburban landscapes in the United States? Using data from a survey of Latina immigrant women and those from mixed-status households in the Chicago suburbs, this research examines barriers Latinas face in accessing healthcare for themselves and their families. This research also asks how those barriers vary among suburban contexts. Qualitative GIS mapping is used to situate women’s experiences in relation to the local availability of healthcare services. The findings show Latina women must make complex spatial, financial, and temporal trade-offs when seeking high quality, linguistically-appropriate healthcare in the Chicago suburbs, especially in exurban areas where services that meet their needs are in short supply. Latina women’s qualitative healthcare experiences in the suburbs are valuable for policy insights targeting this social group. Further, this paper demonstrates how qualitative GIS can be used in understanding spatial access to health services for vulnerable populations.

Resumen

¿Qué tan accesible es la atención médica lingüísticamente apropiada para las mujeres latinas en los paisajes suburbanos demográficamente cambiantes en los Estados Unidos? Usando datos de una encuesta de mujeres inmigrantes latinas y de hogares de estatus mixto en los suburbios de Chicago, esta investigación examina las barreras que enfrentan las latinas para acceder a la atención médica para ellas y sus familias. Esta investigación también cuestiona cómo esas barreras varían entre los contextos suburbanos. El mapeo de SIG cualitativo se utiliza para situar las experiencias de las mujeres en relación con la disponibilidad local de servicios de salud. Los hallazgos muestran que las mujeres latinas deben hacer compensaciones espaciales, financieras y temporales complejas cuando buscan atención médica de alta calidad y lingüísticamente apropiada en los suburbios de Chicago, especialmente en áreas extraurbanas donde los servicios que satisfacen sus necesidades son escasos. Las experiencias cualitativas de atención médica de las mujeres latinas en los suburbios son valiosas para la comprensión de políticas dirigidas a este grupo social. Además, este artículo demuestra cómo se pueden utilizar los SIG cualitativos para comprender el acceso espacial a los servicios de salud para las poblaciones vulnerables.

Quelle est l’accessibilité à des soins de santé adaptés à leurs besoins linguistiques pour les femmes originaires d’Amérique latine dans les environnements de banlieues à démographie changeante des États-Unis ? En se servant des données d’une enquête menée auprès de Latino-Américaines et d’autres femmes qui vivent dans des foyers à statut mixte dans les banlieues de Chicago, cette recherche étudie les obstacles auxquels sont confrontées ces femmes pour accéder à des soins de santé pour elles et pour leurs familles. Elle pose aussi la question concernant les variations de ces barrières selon les environnements de banlieue. Nous utilisons une cartographie SIG qualitative pour situer les expériences de ces femmes par rapport à la disponibilité des services de soins au niveau local. Les résultats montrent que les Latino-Américaines doivent faire des compromis complexes aux niveaux spatiaux, financiers et temporels quand elles sollicitent des soins de santé de bonne qualité et adaptés sur le plan linguistique dans les banlieues de Chicago, surtout dans les zones périurbaines où les services qui correspondent à leurs besoins sont insuffisants. Les expériences qualitatives des soins de santé pour ces femmes dans les banlieues se révèlent précieuses pour les perspectives politiques concernant leur groupe social. En outre, cet article démontre qu’on peut utiliser le SIG qualitatif afin d’appréhender l’accès spatial aux services de santé pour les populations vulnérables.
