Abstract
The introduction of the (Europ)ASI in the 1990s in the Netherlands as a form of standardized assessment of patient characteristics for a variety of purposes was a positive and stimulating event. However, more and more limitations of the instrument itself and its undifferentiated use have become apparent. It is concluded that it is now time to move forward and to develop and select specific instruments designed for specific functions of assessment, and that are able to measure clearly defined domains that are linked to the WHO family of classifications—the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the recently published International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).
