People who insult people

Introduction to Zhou Shou-juan's “We shall meet again” and two denunciations of this type of story

Abstract

In recent issues, Shanghai newspapers have been carrying an advertisement which grieves me deeply, and I imagine there must be a lot of people who feel as I do. I almost couldn't believe my eyes at this advertisement, but there it as—unmistakably written in big, clear characters. It read: “I'd rather not take a concubine / Than to miss out on reading The Saturday Magazine.” Below this was a list of The Saturday Magazine's current contents. Every time they run an ad, they open it with a ditty which is enough to leave one sick at heart and full of pity—this time it was just particularly bad, that's all. I wonder if they're going to think of something even worse in the future.
