Abstract
Public television station WGBH (Boston) has produced the first full-length documentary on Taiwan's political development and the impending crisis between Taiwan and China. The documentary extensively uses film clips from Taiwan's archives on the Japanese occupation and on early Nationalist rule. Equally impressive are the interviews with many of the old-time leaders and intellectuals of Taiwan, including Peng Ming-min, the fiery voice of independence and Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate in the 1996 elections; Wang Tuo and Po Yang, outstanding proponents of native Taiwanese literature; Li Tienlu, a famous puppet master and critic of mainland China's artistic development; and Lien Chan, vice-president of Taiwan.
