Notes

Grunfeld Citation2003.

One curious piece of literature in this vein is a book written by Lawrence Gardella, just before his death, claiming that he was one of six Marines dropped into Manchuria in 1952 to destroy an atomic laboratory complex (although China had no such lab in 1952). Upon accomplishing the task, he claims he was led to a US naval submarine off the South China coast by a fearless anti-communist bandit queen, having traversed some three thousand kilometers (Gardella Citation1981). Fantastic or not, former CIA officers have confirmed frequent agent drops into Manchuria during the spring and summer of 1952. Cf. Holober Citation1999.

Adele Ricket died in 1994, Allyn in 2020. McCann died of cancer in Hong Kong, days after his release from prison in April 1961. Chinese authorities claimed that Redmond committed suicide in prison on April 13, 1970. Jack Downey died in 2014. Richard Fecteau lives in Lynn, Massachusetts.

In January 1955 the US Congress passed the Formosa Resolution Act, which gave the president a free hand to use military force “to secure and protect” Taiwan and the Pescadores (Penghu) Islands. This resolution was similar to the 1963 Tonkin Gulf Resolution.

Two days after Jack Downey was released in March 1973 (and after President Nixon had raised the issue of US prisoners on his 1972 visit to China) the Chinese government released two US Air Force pilots, Colonel Phil Smith and Commander Bob Flynn. While flying over North Vietnam in September 1965, Smith had encountered engine trouble and was forced to land on Hainan Island. Flynn inadvertently flew over Chinese airspace and was shot down in August 1967.
