Introduction: Gender and the plus-size body

Pages 237-260 | Published online: 17 Feb 2007

Notes

1. Notaro also voices a theory that the magazines never truly change, that they are all the same magazine, with new covers for the new month, all with the aim of selling dresses that would be wildly inappropriate for non-bridal occasions.

2. I use the term “minus size” to defy the notion that the standard-issue fashion models represent “normal” or “average” but also to invert the stigma of “plus sizes.”

3. Bordo points to this position as a traditionally feminine, sensuous pose, now seen in many men's high-fashion advertisements as well.
