School as a ritual institution

&
Pages 237-248 | Published online: 24 Feb 2007

Abstract

Based on a video-ethnographic study of a school's everyday life the article shows and discusses ritualisations of children during transition from break time to a lesson. Looking for homologies and contrasts in their cultural performances it distinguishes patterns of ritualisations relating collective and individual territories, and makes clear that the transition from child to pupil is not completed by admission into a school, but a fragile process, which determines everyday school life
