Abstract

Recognition and treatment of the side effects of psychotropic medication as regards sexual function are topics of increasing clinical concern. However, treatment-induced sexual dysfunction is not regularly queried in patients. In this article, we discuss the association between antipsychotic use and sexual dysfunction and how antipsychotics differ in their side-effect profiles. We also investigate possible reasons for under-reporting of sexual side effects, how these problems could be overcome and available treatment options. This review involved web searches (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PUBMED) using key words such as antipsychotics, sexual side effects, hyperprolactinemia and compliance, gathering information from pharmaceutical companies and a literature search of relevant journals.
