Most mathematical careers follow a linear trajectory: doctoral work establishes the researcher in a field, and then follow-up research confirms the researcher as a major figure in an aspect of the area. Thereafter the researcher may quietly continue the themes of the earlier part of their career, or assume a leading role in the development of the area. Jaroslav Stark cannot be classified in this way. He worked in academia and industry. He not only proved fundamental theorems in dynamical systems, but also used computer proofs, developed engineering and electronic applications, wrote about statistical ideas, created methodologies for evaluating clinical practice and was a pioneer of the new wave of mathematical modelling and analysis of biological systems.

Jaroslav Stark died on 6 June 2010, ten days short of his 50th birthday. He had a profound effect on the mathematical landscape in the UK and beyond, both through his scholarship and through his teaching and involvement with funding bodies and journals. He also made many strong friendships within the community. In 1995, he and Colin Sparrow took over the editorship of the journal Dynamics and Stability of Systems, which later became Dynamical Systems; an International Journal. This issue is dedicated to his memory.

After completing his degree and Part III at Cambridge (Peterhouse), Jaroslav moved to Warwick to do a PhD under the supervision of Robert MacKay. There he worked on the existence of invariant curves in the standard map, one of the canonical examples in area-preserving twist maps. He created a computer program that could show the non-existence of invariant curves by trapping any possible invariant curve inside a cone, whose boundaries changed iteratively. If the boundaries crossed over (think of the jaws of a crocodile passing through each other), this showed there could be no local invariant curve. He also worked with Robert MacKay on a beautiful set of lecture notes (unpublished) called Lectures on Orbits of Minimal Action for Area-Preserving Maps which brought together the ideas of Aubry-Mather theory in a unified way.

A further year at Warwick as a Postdoctoral Research Associate was followed by a year at Imperial College, London. In October 1988 he changed the track, accepting a position at the Long-range Research Lab at GEC, where he stayed for almost 5 years. There he worked on a variety of applications in electronics, neural nets, image processing and time series analysis. In 1993 he returned to academia, moving to the Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics and its Applications at UCL. At UCL he started to work on the general theory of quasi-periodically forced systems, an area in which he was to make some profound contributions, particularly on the existence of invariant curves. He also started to collaborate with medical biologists on biological control and on the analysis of databases of medical operations: he was founding father of CoMPLEX, the interdisciplinary centre at UCL for research and doctoral training between the life and mathematical/physical sciences. The early biological work built on the expertise of Kate Hardy on ovulation and ovarian disease and the database analysis on the experience of another Jaroslav Stark, this time the surgeon. It is no coincidence that Kate Hardy was his wife and the other Stark his father. Jaroslav's enthusiasm, curiosity and the range of his technical ability made it inevitable that friends and family would end up working with him.

In 2003 he moved to Imperial College, where he was suppose to continue to develop the ideas of dynamical systems, but developed his expertise in biology, making progress in the growing field of systems biology. He rapidly built up a reputation in this area working both in the mathematics and biology (e.g. motifs), but becoming increasingly involved in the biology itself. In 2007 he became Director of the Centre for Integrative Systems Biology at Imperial College (CISBIC).

Jaroslav's death at such a young age is one of those sad facts that emphasize the uncertainty and impermanence of all our lives. However, he left behind a legacy in his writing and friendships that speaks for itself. The list of publications attached is not a properly researched formal bibliography, but it is a relatively complete and gives a good idea of his contribution and the range of his interests.

A personal note from Paul Glendinning

Although Jaroslav and I overlapped at Cambridge, the first time I am aware of meeting him was in 1983. I was at a conference at the IHES in Paris with Colin Sparrow, and we went out to dinner with Robert MacKay and his new research student from Warwick. This research student came across as a bit loud and brash, but he certainly knew his stuff and was prepared to argue his corner. He got his French menu a little confused, and was devastated at the appearance of a kidney dish! That was Jaroslav. In 1985 I moved to the Mathematics Institute at Warwick for 2 years. Jaroslav was an integral part of the conversations about ideas and developments in all areas of dynamical systems. He wrote slowly, but extraordinarily accurately. Each sentence was complete and once written, material was not revisited. As someone who tends to splurge and then rewrite endlessly, I found this both impressive and irritating.

After Warwick we would meet regularly, continuing our mathematical conversations which developed into a series of collaborations. This was typical of Jaroslav: it was difficult to be his friend without writing papers with him – his enthusiasm for ideas and his ability to think about many different types of problem meant that part of his engagement with people included engaging with their projects or engaging them with his own. This was as true of his family as with friends – he wrote with his father, and his move towards mathematical biology and systems biology was influenced by his wife, Kate Hardy, with whom he wrote many papers.

Jaroslav continued to be loud. I remember someone (Colin Sparrow I think) coming in to check whether we were alright after a particularly long discussion at the King's College Research Centre in Cambridge, much of which was apparently audible along the corridor. And he continued to think creatively and engage with new ideas. He became one of the leading mathematics figures in the country, advising funding bodies and keeping many different balls in the air in his research. His exuberant originality is missed by all those who knew him.

It was impossible to write the paper in this volume with Silvia Pina-Romero without feeling Jaroslav's ghost at my shoulder. The area, quasi-periodically forced maps, is one in which we wrote several papers together. We use directly some of my joint results with Jaroslav, and in so many places his more general results about invariant curves for skew product systems motivated my thinking. It is sad to think we will never discuss it; I am sure he would have asked about all the things Silvia and I did not do!

I miss Jaroslav as a valued colleague and collaborator, but most of all I miss him as a friend. You do not do maths with someone like Jaroslav from a distance. It is part of a broader personal interaction. And these interactions through mathematics, but beyond mathematics (including the Playmobil his son Daniel passed on to my daughters - thank you Daniel), make life rich and create memories that stay with you.

So here are four memories. Giving Jaroslav and Kate a bell at their wedding in Kenwood (do not ask why – it seemed a good idea at the time); walking through sparkling snow on Mount Etna talking about unbounded orbits of lifts of quasi-periodically forced circle maps with zero rotation number; his bemused enjoyment of a Waterson–Carthy concert, Fiona and I dragged him along to with our one-year-old twins; a tearful hug in a stairwell at Imperial College when he had been called back to the hospital. We were meant to be meeting for lunch – he later apologized for alarming me and we talked about how he should reduce his work load. Of course, he did not want to stop doing anything.

A personal note from Peter Ashwin

I got to know Jaroslav in 1999 at a conference in the USA; at the time he and Colin Sparrow were editors-in-chief of the journal and he wanted to know if Matthew Nicol and I would be interested to take it on. He was full of ideas on how to develop the journal – including a suggestion that we should change the name to emphasize the wider questions of dynamics rather than just stability. After a long chat, Matthew and I decided to take it on and I have to say, we were fully supported by Jaroslav every step of the way. He passed on not only the papers in progress but also his own database to track the papers and record the reviewers comments – he had developed this in his spare time. Not being Mac users, Matthew and I were unable to get this to work and were forced to resort to the lower-tech solution of a spreadsheet – only 10 years later did we get a fully functioning manuscript tracking system called Manuscript Central that has essentially the same features that Jaroslav already had in his original database, but with the advantages of a web interface! He continued to be a great support to us at the journal as an associate editor up to the time of his death – he was always willing to suggest reviewers, write reports and would give his advice freely and generously. He will be missed by many other authors, editorial board members, referees and readers of this journal.

A personal note from Matthew Nicol

I knew of Jaroslav's work before I met him, which was probably during one of his trips to UMIST in 1996 or so. As Peter has mentioned, he helped us every step of the way when we took over from Jaroslav and Colin Sparrow as editors of this journal. His advice concerning selecting reviewers and handling various types of papers was always spot on. Jaroslav was a very generous and encouraging person. He was especially supportive of researchers just starting in their careers and took a great interest in their work. This reflected his very broad interests in mathematics and his kindness. At conferences Jaroslav would often be found passionately discussing mathematics with PhD students or recent graduates, and frequently these discussions would end up over a pint. I will miss him.
