The changing landscape of doctoral education: Conclusions and further research

ABSTRACT

The articles in this special issue of Innovations in Education and Teaching International provide a global snapshot of the current state of doctoral education. They show variation across national systems, and at the same time, demonstrate that similarities exist between them. In this concluding article, we summarise the findings from the articles, provide conclusions, and suggest further avenues for research.

Karri A. Holley

Karri A. Holley is Professor of Higher Education at The University of Alabama (USA). She has published widely on issues related to graduate and doctoral education as well as interdisciplinary practice and qualitative inquiry. Her publications include (with Michael S. Harris) The Qualitative Dissertation: A Guide for Integrating Research and Practice (Routledge, 2019) and (with Stan Taylor and Margaret Kiley (Eds.) The Making of Doctoral Supervisors (Routledge, 2022). She is a former chair of the American Educational Research Association Graduate and Postdoctoral Education SIG and former editor of Studies in Graduate and Postdoctoral Education.

Stan Taylor

Stan Taylor was formerly Director of the Centre for Academic and Researcher Development at Durham University (UK) where he is an Honorary Professor in the School of Education. He has many years of experience working with doctoral supervisors to enhance their practice n the UK, Eastern and Western Europe, and the Far East. Recent publications include (with Margaret Kiley and Robin Humphrey) A Handbook for Doctoral Supervisors (Routledge 2018) and (with Margaret Kiley and Karri Holley (Eds.)) The Making of Doctoral Supervisors (Routledge 2022), and (with Vijay Kumar and Sharon Sharmini (Eds.)) Doctoral Examination: Exploring Practice Across the Globe (Routledge, 2023).

Margaret Kiley

Margaret Kiley has an adjunct position at the Australian National University. For many years, her research and teaching interests have been in the education of future researchers. She has worked in further and higher education in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and the UK, and facilitated workshops in a number of countries. In 2017 she received the Australian Council of Graduate Research Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Leadership. Her publications include (with Stan Taylor and Robin Humphrey) A Handbook for Doctoral Supervisors (Routledge 2018) and with Stan Taylor and Karri A. Holley (Eds.) The Making of Doctoral Supervisors (Routledge 2022).
