Olympic ghosts in a former warzone: what the legacy of 1984 means for Sarajevo today

Pages 174-177 | Published online: 14 Jun 2012

Abstract

This photo-essay is an exploration of some of the decaying facilities of Sarajevo's Winter Olympics, held just a few years before war broke out in the region and the city fell under siege. While some facilities are still in use (although in need of modernisation), others were completely or partially destroyed during the years of the siege, and still others were used actively to assist combat. The lack of governmental and economic functionality in Bosnia and Herzegovina today means that these facilities are effectively left to rot, unable to be maintained or rebuilt, but too significant to the city's history to be removed. As the citizens of Sarajevo fight for the improvement of their situation today, these Olympic structures provide a reminder of what the city can become, as well as what it has lost.
