Notes

Studies in this vein argue that children must be appreciated as social actors who actively engage with diverse (and often adverse) social realities in remarkable ways, and at the same time construct meaning. Work focusing on western contexts include Holloway and Valentine Citation(2000), Matthews and Limb Citation(1999), and Skelton Citation(2007), while Katz Citation(2004) provides a fascinating account of children growing up in a developing world context.

See Nguyen et al. Citation(2006) and Toyota et al. Citation(2007) for a discussion of the term ‘left behind’.
