El retrato del viento: Manuel Álvarez Bravo

Abstract

While her mastery of fiction is undeniable, ‘Retrato del viento’ demonstrates Elena Poniatowska's skill as a critic. Always the pioneer in her writing, this is one of the first serious articles to consider the importance of the Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo. This piece follows the rise of Álvarez Bravo, the context in which he worked as he became a photographer, and his place in the realm of Mexican photography. Poniatowska follows the rise of Álvarez Bravo as Latin America's best-known photographer and offers readings of a selection of his most classic photographs. Most useful is the underlining of the themes encountered in his works, the creative processes he follows, and the sources of his inspiration.
