Notes

Selwyn (Citation1996, pp. 6–8) argued that MacCannell used the term to apply both to the search for the ‘authentically social’, in Durkheimian and Turnerian senses, and also, in a Popperian sense, to that which is ‘objectively true’ (in the sense that a museum curator might ascribe period ‘authenticity’ to a material object on the basis of the latest scientific investigation), following which Wang (Citation1999) distinguished between ‘existential’ and ‘objective’ authenticity.
