Matapanui, a replacement name for Matapa Boessenecker & Fordyce, 2016

Abstract

In a study reporting new eomysticetid baleen whale material from the Oligocene of New Zealand, we named a new genus and species Matapa waihao Boessenecker & Fordyce, 2016. We were unaware that the genus name Matapa is preoccupied by the southern Asian butterfly Matapa Moore, 1881. We therefore propose Matapanui Boessenecker & Fordyce nom. nov., with the type species Matapa waihao Boessenecker & Fordyce, 2016, as a replacement name for the preoccupied eomysticetid genus. Etymology: Matapanui, meaning large flat face, from the Māori mata (face) plus pa (flat) and nui (large).
