Professional Characteristics of Humanistic Therapists: Analyses of the Collaborative Research Network sample / Berufliche Characteristika humanistischer Therapeuten: Analysen der Collaborative Research Network Stichprobe / Características Profesionales de los Terapeutas Humanistas: Análisis de una muestra de la Red de Investigación Colaborativa

Abstract

The Collaborative Research Network's (CRN) Development of Psychotherapists Common Core Questionnaire has been completed by more than 5,500 mental health professionals worldwide. We used this data set to examine demographic and practice characteristics that define and distinguish humanistic therapists. We identified four groups of therapists based on their pattern of endorsement on a set of theoretical orientation questions: Purely Humanistic, Mixed Humanistic, Minimally Humanistic, and Wholly Nonhumanistic. We found that about 10% of this sample was Purely Humanistic in orientation, while Mixed Humanists accounted for another 20%. Nonhumanistic and Minimally Humanistic therapists appeared to be predominantly psychodynamic in orientation. We used the data to depict each of the four groups, in particular documenting the nature of the group of Mixed Humanistic therapists, who see a greater number and diversity of clients with apparently greater treatment flexibility.

Zusammenfassung

Der Fragebogen „Collaborative Research Network's (CRN) Development of Psychotherapists Common Core Questionnaire”, wurde weltweit von mehr als 5500 Fachleuten aus dem Fachbereich für seelische Gesundheit ausgefüllt. Wir verwendeten diesen Datenpool, um demographische und Praxis bezogene Charakteristika zu untersuchen, die humanistische Therapeuten definieren und unterscheiden. Wir identifizierten vier Therapeutengruppen aufgrund ihres Musters, wie sie eine Reihe von Fragen zu ihrer theoretischen Orientierung beantworteten: rein humanistisch, gemischt humanistisch, minimal humanistisch und völlig nicht-humanistisch. Wir fanden heraus, dass ungefähr 10% dieser Stichprobe in ihrer Orientierung rein humanistisch waren und weitere 20% gemischt humanistisch. Nicht-humanistische und minimal humanistische Therapeuten schienen vorwiegend psychodynamisch orientiert. Wir verwendeten die Daten, um jede der vier Gruppen zu skizzieren und dokumentierten im Besonderen das Wesen der Gruppe der gemischt humanistischen Therapeuten, die mit einer größeren Anzahl und größeren Spannbreite von Klienten und mit einer offensichtlich größeren Behandlungsflexibilität arbeiten.

El cuestionario desarrollado por la Red de Investigación Colaborativa (CRN) sobre los puntos en común entre psicoterapeutas ha sido completado por más de 5.500 profesionales de salud mental en diversos países del mundo. Usamos este conjunto de información para examinar las características demográficas y de práctica que definen y distinguen a los terapeutas humanistas. Identificamos a cuatro grupos de terapeutas en función de su patrón de confirmación de una serie de preguntas de orientación teórica: puramente humanistas, humanistas mezclados, mínimamente humanistas, y totalmente no humanistas. Encontramos que alrededor del 10% de esta muestra fue puramente humanística en su orientación, mientras que los humanistas mezclados representaron un 20%. Los terapeutas no-humanistas y los mínimamente humanistas resultaron ser predominantemente psicodinámicos en su orientación. Usamos esta información para caracterizar a cada uno de los cuatro grupos, en particular para documentar la naturaleza del grupo de terapeutas humanistas mezclados, quienes trabajan con un número y una diversidad mayor de consultantes con aparentemente mayor flexibilidad de tratamiento.
