Measuring Rogers’ conception of personality development: validation of the Strathclyde Inventory-French version

ABSTRACT

The Strathclyde Inventory (SI) was created as an outcome measure to go beyond symptom intensity. It is designed to assess personality development such as congruent and flexible functioning from a person-centered perspective. The present study validated the data obtained from the 22-item French version of the SI collected in eight samples, including student groups and patients from four different hospital settings. This study describes the psychometric properties of the Strathclyde Inventory-French version. Results indicated high internal consistency and test–retest reliability. A single general Congruence vs. Incongruence factor structure with two subfactors was found. The scale scores indicate sensitivity to the effects of two types of experiential trainings among university students and in an alcohol withdrawal program for hospitalized patients but did not show change in the absence of experiential training and in treatment as usual conditions among cancer and psychiatric patients. Construct validity was confirmed using correlations with data from trait, behavioral and symptom measures. The results indicated that the scale is well designed to assess the process of personality development in training helping professionals and therapy process-outcome studies.

Rogers’ Konzept der Persönlichkeitsentwicklung auf dem Prüfstand: Validierung des Strathclyde Inventory-französische Version

Das Strathclyde Inventory (SI) wurde als Outcome-Messinstrument entwickelt, um mehr als nur Symptomintensität abzubilden. Es soll Persönlichkeitsentwicklung erfassen, wie etwa kongruentes und flexibles Funktionieren aus einer personzentrierten Perspektive. Die hier vorliegende Studie validierte die Daten aus einer 22-Item-Version (französisch) des SI, die in acht Stichproben erhoben wurden. Diese umfassten sowohl Gruppen von Studierenden als auch Patienten aus vier verschiedenen Krankenhaus-Settings. Die Studie beschreibt die psychometrischen Eigenschaften des Strathclyde Inventory-französische Version. Die Resultate deuten auf eine hohe Binnenkonsistenz sowie Test-Retest-Reliabilität. Eine einfache allgemeine Faktor-Struktur Kongruenz versus Inkongruenz mit zwei Subfaktoren wurde gefunden. Die Skalenwerte legen Sensitivität nahe hinsichtlich der Effekte von zwei Arten experienziellen Trainings bei Universitätsstudierenden sowie in einem Alkoholentzugsprogramm für stationäre Patienten. Es zeigte sich aber keine Veränderung ohne experienzielles Training sowie unter den sonst üblichen Behandlungsbedingungen bei Krebs- und Psychiatriepatienten. Konstruktvalidität wurde mit Datenkorrelationen aus Messungen zu Persönlichkeitszügen, Verhalten und Symptomen bestätigt. Die Resultate deuteten darauf hin, dass die Skala den Prozess der Persönlichkeitsentwicklung während eines Trainings gut abbildet, was sowohl für Berufsleute wie auch bei Prozess-Outcome-Studien hilfreich ist.

Midiendo la concepción del desarrollo de la personalidad de Rogers: Validación de la versión francesa de inventario de Strathclyde

El inventario Strathclyde (IS) fue creado como una medida que resulto al ir más allá de la intensidad del síntoma. Está diseñado para evaluar el desarrollo de la personalidad tales como el funcionamiento congruente y flexible desde una perspectiva centrada en la persona. El presente estudio valido los datos obtenidos de la versión francesa del artículo 22 del IS recogido en ocho muestras, incluyendo grupos de estudiantes y pacientes de cuatro hospitales diferentes. Este estudio describe las propiedades psicométricas de la versión de Strathclyde del inventario francés. Los resultados indicaron alta consistencia interna y fiabilidad test-retest. Se encontró una sola estructura de factor congruencia vs incongruencia general con dos factores secundarios. Las puntuaciones de la escala indican sensibilidad a los efectos de dos tipos de entrenamientos experienciales entre estudiantes universitarios y en un programa de retiro del alcohol para pacientes hospitalizados pero no mostraron cambio en la ausencia del entrenamiento experiencial y en tratamiento de condiciones acostumbradas entre los pacientes de cáncer y psiquiátricos. La validez del constructo fue confirmada usando correlaciones con datos de carácter, comportamiento y medidas del síntoma. Los resultados indicaron que la escala está bien diseñada para evaluar el proceso de desarrollo de la personalidad en formación ayudando a profesionales que se están entrenando y estudios de proceso, resultado de la terapia.

Mesurer la conception de Rogers du développement de la personnalité: Une validation de l’Inventaire de Strathclyde en version française

Le Strathclyde Inventory (SI) fut créé afin d’obtenir une mesure des résultats qui aille au-delà de l’intensité des symptômes. Il est conçu pour mesurer le développement de la personnalité et le fonctionnement flexible selon l’approche centrée sur la personne. La présente recherche valide la version française du SI en 22 items sur base de données récoltées auprès de huit échantillons, incluant des groupes d’étudiants et de patients provenant de quatre cadres hospitaliers différents. Cette étude décrit les propriétés psychométriques du Strathclyde Inventory en version française. Les résultats ont indiqué une consistance interne et une fiabilité test-retest élevées. Une structure factorielle à un seul facteur général Congruence vs. Incongruence et deux sous-facteurs fut trouvée. Les scores à l’échelle indiquent une sensibilité aux effets de deux types de formations expérientielles parmi les étudiants universitaires et auprès de patients impliqués dans un programme de sevrage alcoolique mais n’ont pas montré de changement en l’absence de pédagogie expérientielle ou dans des conditions de traitement-comme-à l’habitude pour des patients souffrant de cancer ou en psychiatrie. La validité de construit fut confirmée en utilisant des corrélations avec des données de mesures de trait, comportementales ou de symptômes. Les résultats ont indiqué que l’échelle est adéquate pour évaluer le processus de développement de la personnalité de professionnels de l’aide qui sont en formation et pour des études évaluant les processus-résultats de thérapie.

Medindo a conceção de Rogers da Teoria da Personalidade: validação do Inventário de Strathclyde – versão francesa

O Inventário de Strathclyde (IS) foi criado como uma medida de resultados que devia ir além da intensidade dos sintomas. Este instrumento foi concebido para aferir o desenvolvimento da personalidade, designadamente o funcionamento congruente e flexível, numa perspetiva centrada na pessoa. O presente estudo validou os dados obtidos com a aplicação da versão francesa de vinte e dois itens a oito amostras, as quais incluíam grupos de estudantes e de pacientes de quatro contextos hospitalares distintos. Este estudo descreve as propriedades psicométricas da versão francesa do Inventário de Strathclyde. Os resultados apontam para uma consistência interna elevada e uma forte fiabilidade no teste-reteste. Foi encontrado um fator estrutural relativo à Congruência vs. Incongruência, com dois sub-fatores. Os resultados da escala indicam a existência de sensibilidade ao efeito de dois tipos de formação experiencial entre estudantes universitários e num programa de abstinência do álcool em pacientes hospitalizados, mas não demonstram alterações na ausência de formação experiencial e no tratamento enquanto condições presentes em doentes oncológicos e psiquiátricos. A validade de conceito foi confirmada através de correlações de medidas de traços, comportamentos e sintomas. Os resultados indicam que a escala está bem concebida para avaliar o desenvolvimento da personalidade em profissionais de relação de ajuda em formação e em estudos de resultados do processo psicoterapêutico.

She practices psychotherapy in a mental health center.

Céline Brison was a PhD student, teaching and research assistant in the clinical psychology department at the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium. Her research focuses on the effects of therapeutic attitudes on psychotherapeutic change. She is now a clinical psychologist and she supports victims of domestic violence and disabled persons.

Robert Elliott is professor of counselling at the University of Strathclyde. He is co-author of Learning Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Research methods in clinical psychology, plus more than 150 journal articles and book chapters. He has received the Distinguished Research Career Award from the Society for Psychotherapy Research.

Brian Rodgers

Brian Rodgers is a senior lecturer at the Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. His research interest focuses on the collaborative exploration of the outcomes of counselling and psychotherapy using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Brian is also a practicing counsellor and supervisor.

Jeffrey H.D. Cornelius-White is professor of Counseling at Missouri State University and doctoral faculty or guest lecturer at several universities.
