The encounter group in counseling training: is it therapy?

ABSTRACT

The use of encounter groups in counselor training is widespread and long-standing tradition in academic programs. Some educators are opposed to the implementation of encounter groups due to the perception that encounter groups as part of training programs are unethical because they are considered facilitation of therapy with students. This article explores the rationale, definition, and role of encounter groups in the context of the role of education. Additionally, the role of faculty members in encounter groups is also discussed.

Le groupe de rencontre dans la formation de counselling. Est-ce une thérapie ?

L’utilisation des groupes de rencontre dans la formation de counsellor est une tradition qui existe depuis longtemps et qui est largement répandue dans les programmes académiques. Certains enseignants sont opposés à l’implémentation de groupes de rencontre en raison de l’impression que les groupes de rencontre faisant partie d’un programme de formation ne sont pas éthiques car ils sont considérés comme une facilitation de la thérapie avec les étudiants. Cet article explore la logique, la définition et le rôle des groupes de rencontre dans le contexte de l’éducation. Enfin, le rôle des membres de la faculté dans les groupes de rencontre est également discuté.

Este artigo explica a lógica, a definição e o papel dos grupos de encontro no contexto do papel da formação. Para além disso, discute-se o papel desempenhado pelos docentes em grupos de encontro.

Resumen: El uso de grupos de encuentro en la formación de consejeros es una tradición generalizada y de larga data en los programas académicos. Algunos educadores se oponen a la implementación de grupos de encuentro debido a la percepción de que los grupos de encuentro como parte de los programas de capacitación no son éticos porque se consideran facilitación de la terapia con los estudiantes. Este artículo explora los fundamentos, la definición y el papel de los grupos de encuentro en el contexto del papel de la educación. Además, también se discute el papel de los miembros de la facultad en los grupos de encuentro.
