Thrice over the fire: some reflections on contact, culture, context, and whiteness

ABSTRACT

This article aims to provoke thinking about whiteness, culture and identity in relation to psychotherapy practice. The writing concludes with a poem that situates the author within an enriched environment that includes her ancestors and cultural heritage. Poetry illuminates hard to reach places, surfacing lived experiences that might otherwise hide in their everydayness. For the white therapist a poetic imagination might bring whiteness forth from invisibility, laying it bare for closer inspection, facilitating greater understandings and openness. The author, a white therapist and researcher, uses poetic inquiry, to foster an enhanced cultural awareness with a view to seeing self and ‘other’ afresh. The article invites the white person-centered therapist to engage with their own self-understandings to facilitate enhanced cultural engagement, sensitivity and awareness.

Cet article vise à provoquer une réflexion sur la blancheur, la culture et l’identité en lien avec la pratique de la psychothérapie. L’écriture se termine par un poème qui situe l’auteur dans un environnement enrichi par ses ancêtres et son héritage culturel. La poésie illumine des endroits difficiles d’accès, faisant apparaître des expériences vécues qui pourraient autrement se dissimuler dans leur quotidienneté. Pour le thérapeute blanc, l’imagination poétique pourrait faire émerger la blancheur de l’invisibilité, la mettre à nu dans une inspection plus approfondie, faciliter une plus grande compréhension et une plus grande ouverture. L’auteur, un thérapeute et chercheur blanc, utilise l’investigation poétique pour favoriser une conscience culturelle accrue en vue de se voir et de voir « l’autre » d’une manière renouvelée. L’article invite le thérapeute centré sur la personne blanc à s’engager avec sa propre compréhension de soi pour faciliter un engagement, une sensibilité et une prise de conscience culturels accrus.

Dieser Artikel möchte dazu provozieren, über das Weiss-Sein nachzudenken, über Kultur und Identität in Bezug auf die psychotherapeutische Praxis. Er schliesst mit einem Gedicht, welches die Autorin in eine reiche Umgebung samt ihren Vorfahren und ihrem kulturellen Erbe platziert. Dichtung erhellt schwierig erreichbare Orte, lässt gelebte Erfahrung aufscheinen, die sich ansonsten im Alltäglichen versteckt. Für die weisse Therapeutin mag eine poetische Imagination das Weiss-Sein aus der Unsichtbarkeit zutage fördern, dies für genauere Inspektion bloss legen und damit tieferes Verstehen und mehr Offenheit ermöglichen. Die Autorin, eine weisse Therapeutin und Forscherin, verwendet die poetische Befragung, um eine vertiefte kulturelle Bewusstheit zu ermöglichen, um sich selbst und ‘andere’ mit frischem Blick zu betrachten. Der Artikel lädt die weisse personzentrierte therapeutische Fachperson dazu ein, sich mit ihrem eigenen Selbst-Verstehen auseinanderzusetzen, um vertieftes kulturelles Engagement, Empfänglichkeit und Bewusstheit zu ermöglichen.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo incentivar la reflexión sobre la blancura, la cultura y la identidad en relación con la práctica de la psicoterapia. El escrito concluye con un poema que sitúa a la autora en un entorno enriquecido que incluye a sus ancestros y herencia cultural. La poesía ilumina lugares de difícil acceso, sacando a la superficie experiencias vividas que de otro modo podrían ocultarse en su cotidianidad. Para el terapeuta blanco, una imaginación poética podría hacer surgir la blancura de la invisibilidad, dejándola al descubierto para una inspección más cercana, facilitando una mayor comprensión y apertura. Este artigo tem como objetivo provocar o pensamento acerca de ser-se branco, a cultura e a identidade em relação à prática da psicoterapia. O texto termina com um poema que situa a autora num ambiente enriquecido que inclui os seus antepassados e o seu património cultural. A poesia lança luz em lugares difíceis de alcançar, trazendo à superfície experiências vividas que de outra forma poderiam esconder-se no seu quotidiano. Para o terapeuta branco, uma imaginação poética pode trazer à luz o facto de ser branco, permitindo analisá-lo mais de perto e facilitando maior entendimento e abertura. O autor, um terapeuta e investigador branco, recorre à curiosidade poética para promover uma maior consciência cultural com vista a olhar para o próprio e para o “outro” numa nova perspetiva. O artigo convida o terapeuta branco centrado na pessoa a envolver-se com o seu entendimento de si mesmo para facilitar mais: envolvimento cultural, sensibilidade e tomada de consciência.

Emma Green is a registered psychotherapist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand). She teaches in the Psychotherapy and Counselling programme at the Auckland University of Technology and has a small private practice.
