Professor Chris Rumford, 1958–2016

The Editors and members of the Editorial board were very saddened to hear of the loss of Chris Rumford earlier this year and we would like to take this opportunity to extend our condolences to his loved ones and pay tribute to an exceptional colleague. As a member of the Editorial Board Chris made an invaluable contribution to the journal and the debates that underline our collective endeavour as an editorial committee: Chris was collegial, professional and always ready to help, advise, read manuscripts and undertake editorial responsibility. Chris came across as a reserved yet passionate human being, not afraid of challenge and adversity, forward looking and imaginative, full of intellectual energy. A founding member of the Department of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway, he worked hard to establish its institutional distinctiveness and reputation. He was one of the founders of the Centre for Global and Transnational Politics and left his mark on this endeavour. His work on several aspects of the politics of space in the European and Global context left an indelible mark on the debate on Europeanisation. His discussion of the global condition of strangeness in a modern and globalised context has inspired a broader debate. His energy, passion and resolve will be sadly missed and his absence sorely felt by everyone he touched in professional and social contexts alike. We, fellow editorial board members of the Journal, feel privileged to have worked closely with Chris, to have benefited from his contribution and to have been touched by his generosity and collegiality. Chris, you will be sorely missed yet fondly remembered.
