Analytic results for a phase transition in a planar array of chains

Abstract

Analytic results for the free energy and specific heat of a planar array of chains are obtained within the ‘two level approximation’. The numerical results of Stoeckly and Scalapino, and several Monte Carlo simulations, are supported by exact formulae, in terms of torus functions. The cross-over between one- and two-dimensional behaviour is discussed.
