Introducing Phil Mag Part B Symposia Issues

Page 2397 | Published online: 17 May 2012

The reinvigoration of Philosophical Magazine as a journal for your condensed matter physics articles began in 2011 when the journal contents were divided into two parts: Part A for materials science and Part B for condensed matter physics. One year on, Philosophical Magazine continues to raise the profile of the condensed matter physics component of the journal by building on the success of the re-launch of Part B with the introduction of Symposium Issues. Our aim is to assemble both review and research papers on a focussed area of condensed matter physics which we believe is going to be very important to the journal's interdisciplinary community over the next decade.

The first Symposium is entitled ‘Design, discovery and growth of novel materials’, guest edited by Professor Paul C. Canfield, winner of a 2011 Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award and Associate Editor. The goal of this collection of papers is to present technical details of current, state-of-the-art research and developments by experts in the design, discovery and characterisation of crystalline materials. The discovery of novel materials with improved or brand new properties, addressed in this Symposium Issue, is particularly apt in a world where pressure is growing for humanity to solve its energy, environmental and technological problems through the design and discovery of specialised materials. We are also looking forward to the publication of two additional Symposium Issues: one on ‘Computational methods in many-body physics’ to be edited by Dr Jason Lashley and another on ‘Quantum phase transitions’ to be edited by Professor Yan Chen.

The Editors of Philosophical Magazine value the input of members of the physics community and would welcome your suggestions for future Symposium Issues. We would also willingly embrace suggestions as to how the Journal could be improved to address your scientific needs. Please email [email protected]

All Part B condensed matter physics papers that appear in Philosophical Magazine will be free to view online for 30 days after online publication in an issue to catalyse the dissemination of research.

Submissions to Philosophical Magazine Part B should be made online at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/pm-pml
