Potential differences produced in sodium chloride crystals by plastic deformation at 4·2°K

Abstract

Sodium chloride crystals were plastically deformed by compression, bending and indentation tests, both at room temperature and at 4·2°K, and potential differences were observed between electrodes on their surfaces. The potentials produced at 4·2°K were of opposite sign to those found at room temperature, suggesting that the charge carried by the dislocations may change sign between these temperatures.
