Influence of dislocations in au on a crossed lattice image

Abstract

Crossed lattice images have been obtained showing the perturbing influence of dislocations in gold on the 2.04 Å spacing of two sets of (200) planes crossed by the 1.44 Å spacing of a set of (220) planes. Bassett, Menter and Pashley's (1958) equation N = hu + kv + lw, where N is the number of resolved (hkl) planes which terminate at the dislocations, has been applied to determine two components, i.e. u and v, of their Burgers vectors [uvw]. Thus these direct resolution images do not, by themselves, permit a determination of the actual character of the imaged dislocations. Also, an example is presented which shows that the values of u and v are not unambiguously determined by this equation as their values are dependent on how the Burgers circuit is made to determine N.
