On creep failure resulting from wedge crack growth

Abstract

A simple model is presented which enables the creep failure of materials to be discussed. In the proposed mechanism wedge cracks are nucleated in polycrystalline materials due to grain boundary sliding. By considering the stability of a wedge crack it is possible to derive a relation between the time to fracture and the minimum creep rate which compares favourably with the experimental results.
