Melting point and structure factor of liquid metals

Pages 287-295 | Received 25 Nov 1971, Published online: 02 Sep 2006

Abstract

By the use of the Percus—Yevick formulation where a liquid is described in terms of 3N collective coordinates, it is possible to relate the entropy of melting to the long wave length limit of the liquid structure factor.

For the twelve metals considered in the present paper the agreement between theory and experiment is satisfactory.

An extension of the method to binary liquid alloys would throw light on the low k-behaviour of their structure factors.
