A study of loop annealing kinetics using a physical electrostatic analogue

Abstract

In the derivation of loop annealing kinetics several assumptions are made regarding the positions of sources and sinks. In this paper it is shown how a physical electrostatic analogue permits exact reproduction of the geometry present in this foils as well as the vacancy concentration gradients between sinks and sources. This method has been used to study the importance of foil thickness to the loop growth rate equations. It is also shown that in double loop annealing it is possible for an appreciable vacancy flux to exist between the inner and outer loops and that this has caused an erroneous determination of the stacking fault energy of magnesium by previous workers. The corrected value is shown to be 65 ± 17 erg/cm2.
