Abstract
Fortune Bay on the south coast is an exception to the general decline in lobster landings that prevailed around Newfoundland during the 1990s. High landings not only continued beyond the early 1990s peak for the island as a whole but have actually continued increasing to unprecedented levels. The influence of egg production around St. Pierre-Miquelon (French islands at the mouth of Fortune Bay) as well as the timing of hydro-electric and aquaculture developments in Bay d'Espoir are considered in this pape ras possible causes of the high landings in the study area. Recommendations are made to modify the current management regime to include a more moderate level of exploitation (and thus a higher portion of potential population egg production) to ensure ongoing strong recruitment and a sustainable fishery.
