Pages 121-136 | Published online: 21 Nov 2010

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the perceived significance of factors influencing leisure participation by gender. Respondents were undergraduate students (n = 165) from one of the tourism and hotel management schools in Turkey who completed a questionnaire comprising of 45 variables (e.g., freedom, ethnicity, social class, health, social changes, social interaction) relevant to leisure participation selected from previous studies. From a cross‐cultural perspective, the results similar to Western studies showed that there were significant differences by gender. Particularly, female participants were more likely than males to be influenced by many of the identified variables including: (a) responsibilities, (b) satisfaction and expectation from life, (c) perception of opportunities, (d) social politics arranging leisure activities, (e) ethnicity, and (f ) status of men and women in society.
