Community development, leisure research and practice

Abstract

This article discusses the importance of Community Development (CD) to both leisure studies and the practice of recreation. It is argued that the CD approach to research and practice will be empowering to the researched and participants in leisure activity. CD focuses its effort on the identification of individual and community needs rather than treating the citizen simply as a study subject. CD promotes a partnership between the community and the research effort.

Résumé

Cet article discute l'importance du développement communautaire (DC) aux études en loisir. Le DC concentre son effort sur l'identification de l'individu et les besoins communautaires plutôt que de traiter le citoyen simplement comme sujet d'étude. Le DC favorise une association entre la communauté et la recherche. En terminant, l'application de cette approche à la recherche en loisir engendre une compétence et aptitude chez les chercheurs et les participants.
