W.J.S. Walker and the Canadian national parks association: Protectors of Canadian leisure interests

Abstract

Based on the reconstruction of 29 years of publications and correspondence, this article reviews the work of the Canadian National Parks Association and W.J.S. (Selby) Walker in attempting, first to protect Rocky Mountains Park, and later to expand and protect Canada's national parks system and to promote recreation, fitness, travel, and tourism. The initiatives of Selby Walker and of the Canadian National Parks Association are inextricably linked. For most of the 29‐year life of the Association, Selby Walker was its spokesman, and when he died in 1952 the Association ceased to operate. This article includes the description of the CNPA's publications and correspondence to determine its view of parks and recreation, the role of Selby Walker, and the activities, membership, organizational alliances, policies, and influence of the Association. .

Basé sur la reconstruction de 29 ans de publications et de correspondance, cet article analyse le travail de l'association canadienne de parcs nationaux et W.J.S. (Selby) Walker. M. Walker fut l'un des premiers partisans a suggéré la protection des montagnes Rocheuses, et plus tard d'augmenter et protéger le système des parcs nationaux du Canada, et de favoriser la récréation, l'activité physique, le voyage, et le tourisme dans nos aires protégés. Les initiatives de Selby Walker et de l'association canadienne de parcs nationaux sont inextricablement liées. Pendant plus de 29 ans, la majorité de la vie de l'association, Walker fut le porte‐parole de cet organisme, a sa mort en 1952, l'association cessa d'exister.
