Journeying by canoe: Reflections on the canoe and spirituality

Pages 217-239 | Published online: 21 Nov 2010

Abstract

The canoe and spirituality are subjects often related but seldom rigorously studied together. This paper combines the literature on the canoe and Canadian culture with that of leisure and spirituality to draw out the intersections between the canoe and spirituality. The paper is divided into two sections. The first focuses on spirituality and the physical act of canoeing; and the second on the way the canoe, spiritual experience, and wilderness experience intersect. These sections are subdivided into a number of subthemes (the design of the canoe; the act of paddling; the act of portaging; canoeing in groups or alone; the loss of “baggage” a sense of connection with nature; and the relation between the canoe, spirituality, and Canadian culture). The subject is also examined historically by focusing on two different canoe cultures: the working culture of the voyageurs and the recreational culture of the canoe trip. By investigating the different ways humans have interacted with the canoe, it is possible to differentiate themes that are implicit to the canoe from those more conditioned by a particular set of historical circumstances.
