Visitor perception of Tokyo’s parks’ attributes: an analysis of the textual reviews

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the satisfaction of urban park attributes of local residents and foreign tourists. By analyzing textual reviews generated by local (n = 490) and overseas visitors (n = 494) to five large urban parks in Tokyo (Japan), this study identified nine key attributes that were frequently mentioned about the parks. Among these attributes, ‘cherry trees’ was the most popular and frequently mentioned one. Although it was similarly perceived by both overseas and local visitors, this attribute was better recalled in the spring than in any other season. In addition, ‘entrance fee’ was mentioned and accepted favourably by more of the overseas visitors, while park size was referred to more by the local citizens (either neutral/mixed or positive). Based on these findings, theoretical and practical implications of this study, and directions for future research are proposed.

RéSUMé

L’objectif de cette étude est d’évaluer la satisfaction des résidents et des touristes étrangers par rapport aux attributs d’un parc urbain. En analysant et en comparant les avis écrits des visiteurs locaux (n = 490) et des touristes étrangers (n = 494) portant sur cinq grands parcs urbains de Tokyo (Japon), cette étude a permis de dégager neuf caractéristiques clés souvent mentionnées au sujet des parcs. Parmi ces caractéristiques, les « cerisiers » sont les plus populaires et le plus souvent mentionnés. Les visiteurs étrangers comme les locaux ont le même intérêt pour les cerisiers, mais cet intérêt est plus marqué au printemps qu’à toute autre saison. Le « prix d’entrée » est aussi mentionné et apprécié par un plus grand nombre de visiteurs étrangers, tandis que la taille du parc est mentionnée plus souvent par les locaux (neutres, mitigés ou positifs). Les orientations que nous proposons pour la recherche future sont fondées sur ces constatations, et sur les implications théoriques et pratiques de l’étude.
