National coaching certification program in Canada: understanding the relationship dynamics between coach evaluators and the coach

ABSTRACT

Amateur sports organizations rely on volunteer coaches to ensure that successful programmes are implemented. As such, in Canada, it has become common practice that these coaches must participate in minimum educational experiences and demonstrate their coaching abilities through an evaluation. With a low number of coaches achieving certified status relative to those engaging in training workshops it becomes important to understand more about the evaluation process. Thus, the purpose of this research was to understand how Coach Evaluators (CEs) build relationships in evaluation situations and how those relationships are needed for achieving certification. Using an interpretive phenomenological analysis, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 27 CEs representing 14 sports in Canada. The results identified themes that were explained by applying a framework on coaching types. Through this framework, this research determined the success or non-success of the evaluation process.

Résumé

Les organismes de sport amateur comptent sur des entraîneurs bénévoles pour mettre en oeuvre leurs programmes d'activités. Ainsi, il est devenu pratique courante au Canada que ces entraîneurs participent à des formations sommaires et se soumettent à une évaluation pour montrer leur capacité à encadrer des jeunes. La proportion d'entraîneurs qui réussissent à obtenir la certification étant trés limitée par rapport au nombre de participants à ces formations (Association canadienne des entraîneurs, 2018), nous estimons important de mieux étudier le processus d'évaluation. Le but de cette étude cherche à découvrir comment les entraîneurs-évaluateurs (EE) établissent des liens avec les entraîneurs qu’ils évaluent et en quoi ces liens sont nécessaires à l’obtention d’une certification. À partir d’une analyse phénoménologique interprétative, les données ont été colligées au moyen d’entrevues semi-structur’es avec 27 EE représentant 14 sports au Canada. Les résultats nous ont permis de dégager des thémes qui ont pu être interprétés en employant le cadre de travail de Berg et Karlson (2007) au sujet des divers types d’encadrement. L’application de ce cadre de travail à notre étude a permis de déterminer l’issue du processus d’évaluation.
