Abstract
Current considerations in pediatric speech perception assessment are highlighted in this article with a focus on specific test principles and variables that must be addressed when evaluating speech perception performance in children. Existing test materials are reviewed with an emphasis on the level of sensitivity and standardization that they have for accurate assessment of a child's speech perception performance. A test battery approach is advocated because speech perception is an abstract construct, and in order to provide a comprehensive assessment of a child's capabilities, information is needed from several sources of concrete data. The importance of ongoing speech perception assessment in children is also emphasized because a child's progress over time must be monitored to determine if improvements need to be made with amplification and intervention efforts. Results from pediatric speech perception assessments can provide practical information regarding the prognosis of speech, language, reading, and cognitive abilities of children as well as steps that need to be taken in the intervention process.

Sumario
Las consideraciones actuales sobre la evaluación pediátrica de la percepción del lenguaje se subrayan en este artículo con un enfoque en los principios específicos de las pruebas y en las variables que deben considerarse cuando se evalúa el rendimiento en la percepción del lenguaje en niños. Se revisan los materiales de prueba existentes, con énfasis en el nivel de sensibilidad y la estandarización que tienen, para lograr una evaluación precisa del rendimiento en la percepción del lenguaje del niño. Se defiende el enfoque de una batería de pruebas porque la percepción del lenguaje es un montaje abstracto y porque con objeto de proveer una evaluación integral de las capacidades del niño se necesita información de diversas fuentes de datos concretos. Se enfatiza también la importancia de las evaluaciones actuales de la percepción del lenguaje en niños, porque su progreso en el tiempo debe ser monitoreado para determinar si se requiere mejorar la amplificación y los esfuerzos en la intervención. Los resultados de las evaluaciones pediátricas de la percepción del lenguaje pueden proporcionar información práctica en relación con el pronóstico de habla, lenguaje, lectura y habilidades cognitivas de los niños, así como con las medidas que deben tomarse en el proceso de intervención.
