Auditory disorders in a South African paediatric TBI population: Some preliminary data

Abstract

South Africa has an exceptionally high incidence of traumatic brain injury in its paediatric population but very little systematic research has been conducted on the outcome of such injury. A number of socio demographic variables influence the mechanism of injury as well as its management. This paper reports on a study documenting the educational and audiological outcomes of a group of 100 subjects who sustained their injuries prior to the age of 12 years. The hearing and communication profile of this group is considered in relation to educational outcome. An illustrative case study will demonstrate the multiple influences on outcome in this setting, as well as the need for integrated team management. In the sample, 31% had a reported hearing loss, confirmed audiologically in 14% of subjects. The majority of the sample returned to a mainstream school. However, analysis indicated that about 75% of the sample was in need of specialized education, while only 22% of that sample had received any additional support. The implications of these findings for audiological policy and practice are highlighted.

África del Sur tiene una incidencia excepcionalmente alta de lesiones traumáticas del cerebro (TBI) en su población pediátrica, a pesar de lo cual se han realizado muy pocas investigaciones sistematizadas sobre los efectos de estas lesiones. Muchas variables socio-demográficas influyen en los mecanismos de la lesión y en su manejo. Este trabajo reporta un estudio que documenta los efectos audiológicos y educativos en un grupo de 100 sujetos que sufrieron sus lesiones antes de la edad de 12 años. El perfil de audición y comunicativo de este grupo se considera en relación con los resultados educativos. Un caso ilustrativo demostrará las múltiples influencias en los resultados en este escenario y también la necesidad de un manejo por un grupo integrado. En la muestra, 31% tuvieron reportes de pérdida auditiva, confirmada audiológicamente en el 14% de los sujetos. La mayoría de los integrantes de la muestra regresó a escuelas regulares. Sin embargo, el análisis indicó que alrededor del 75% de ellos tenía necesidad de educación especial, mientras que solo el 22% había recibido algún apoyo adicional. Se enfatizan las implicaciones de estos hallazgos en las políticas y prácticas audiológicas.
