Abstract
This paper points out that median line sea boundaries, fishery, and concession limits in the North Sea are defined in terms of ED50 coordinates; and that the definition of ED50 in the North Sea should be based on the given unique ED50 coordinates of geodetic points in the coastal zone of the surrounding land areas, which in the light of present day standards and needs represent a nonhomogeneous network. The paper describes the evolution of a philosophy on the establishment of such a definition, and how the positioning problems in the North Sea have been solved in conformity with this philosophy and with the use of NNSS (Navy Navigation Satellite System). The practical use of the definition is demonstrated by a recomputation of the coordinates of a stable platform in the North Sea.
