1 Deepwater Horizon was a deep-water oil well that blew up causing massive oil pollution in the Gulf of Mexico. Auto Emission scandal refers to installation of cheat devices installed on cars to trick emissions inspection apparatus to pass a car inspection.
2 The term symptomatic data refers to data that is about symptoms. Symptoms of a problem are easily visible; hence it is very natural to collect data on symptoms. Root causes are not very obvious; therefore it is easy to overlook data collection about root causes.

Ajaya K. Swain
Ajaya K. Swain is an Assistant Professor of Quantitative Management in the Finance and Quantitative Management Department in the Greehey School of Business at St. Mary’s University. He received his MS in Industrial Management Systems Engineering from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and an MBA in Business Statistics and PhD in Operations Management from Texas Tech University. For the past six years he has been involved in both teaching and developing technology and data analytics related courses. His research interests lie in predictive and social media analytics. His research has been published in European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Manufacturing Processes, and IEEE Computer Society Journal, among others.
