From the editor’s desk

I am pleased to present the 23(4)th issue of the Journal of IT Case and Application Research (JITCAR). The contents of this issue are an editorial preface article by the current AIS President, Dr. Suprateek Sarkar; case-based research article authored by Dr. Zixing Shen; a teaching case authored by Dr. Hyung Koo Lee; expert opinion report written by Dr. Vic Matta, and the book review presented by Dr. Bryan Hosack. Summary information on these items is as follows.

In the editorial preface article, Ten Statements Related to Qualitative Research in IS: True or False? Suprateek guides the readers through ten frequently held beliefs about qualitative research in our IS community, some of which are not necessarily true. The article helps to provide clarity about qualitative research and how authors and reviewers sometimes misunderstand this form of research. We believe the advice will help researchers from IS and other related fields investigate and analyze IS-related phenomena using a qualitative research lens.

The first research article is titled Effects of Information Technology on Temporal Experiences: Findings from a Hospital Emergency Department. The study examines how the use of IT affects the temporal experiences in the workplace. Using an interpretive case study in an emergency department (ED) of a hospital located in the Mid-Western United States, the study advances our theoretical understanding and empirical knowledge about IT-mediated temporal experiences.

The teaching case is titled Developing CRMSys at SoftTel: Traditional or Agile? In this teaching case study, the author provides a discussion case to facilitate the students’ learning of using agile vs. traditional approaches in software development. This case study is developed based on experiences of multiple real-world software development projects. It is designed to reflect the complexities students are likely to encounter in actual software development projects. The case can be used in undergraduate or graduate-level management information systems courses covering agile software development approaches.

The Expert Opinion report by Vic Matta narrates an interview with Josh Thomas. Josh has been the VP of Information Technology at Rocky Brands since February 2017 and has been with the company since January 2013. Rocky Brands manufacture premium footwear and apparel with almost 3000 employees worldwide and annual revenue of about $500 million. The umbrella of Rocky brands includes brands like Rocky Boots, Georgia Boot, Durango, among others. In the interview, Josh discusses the challenges his organization faced with COVID-19 and shares how he visualizes COVID-19 transforming IT in his organization in the future. He also provides valuable IT-related advice to practitioners, IS researchers, and students alike.

The book review report by Bryan Hosack provides a critical analysis of the book titled DATA STORY: Explain Data and Inspire Action Through Story. The book was edited By Nancy Duarte and was published in 2019 by Ideapress Publishing. Bryan notes that the book presents a compelling case to use story when presenting data. According to Bryan, Duarte provides many powerful tools and compelling examples to consider when initially situating the story for explanation to a particular audience to influence and drive decision-making.

I hope you will enjoy reading all the items in this issue.

With best regards,

Sincerely
