Skin of Hate, Skin of Love

Abstract

While skin can be expressive of self-representation, skin can also be the origin of self-representations and of particular problems in self-representation. The significant part that skin has played in a four-year psychoanalysis is described. The article then focuses on one function of skin, that of containment, and relates this containment function to the patient's sense of herself and to thoughts about psychoanalytic work.
