Notes

1 Newman was a remarkable and influential Jewish educator, deeply committed to combining progressive education and Jewish education. Aside from being an early Ramah director, he was one of the first principals of Akiba Hebrew Academy in Philadelphia (now named Jack Barrack Academy), generally considered the first community Jewish day high school in America; he was the first director of the Melton Research Center at JTS, and later the head of the Bureau of Jewish Education in Boston.
