Notes

Stafford and Canary target the work of Ragsdale alone as well as that of Ragsdale and Brandau-Brown, but for the sake of simplicitywe henceforth use “we” regardless of the work's author.

The terminology is misleading, because Stafford and Canary did not measure actual use, but instead asked participants to describe the degree to which an item characterized their methods of relational maintenance over a period such as the last 2 weeks. This issue was raised in CitationRagsdale (1996) as a justification for a diary log methodology.

We use the SAS statistical package and PROC CALIS for confirmatory factor analyses, rather than SPSS and AMOS, therefore we consulted Shuangyue Zhang regarding the characteristics of Stafford and Canary's analysis. Dr. Zhang, as noted in their article, assisted Stafford and Canary. He performed the confirmatory factor analyses. We are pleased to acknowledge his assistance in interpreting them.
