Atmospheric dilution of fume hood exhaust gases

Pages 185-189 | Published online: 04 Jun 2010

Abstract

Guidelines are proposed for the design of fume hood exhaust systems such that sufficient atmospheric dilution is obtained to prevent unacceptable contamination of fresh air intakes. An empirical design criterion, which has been employed successfully at a number of large pharmaceutical research laboratories, is presented. The literature on the calculation of atmospheric dilution near buildings is reviewed, and suggestions are offered regarding the appropriate choice of a design formula for a given application.
