Abstract

The K2 Asbestos Screening Test was used to analyze 185 samples of material suspected of containing asbestos which were obtained from public schools in Colorado. The purpose was to determine if the test could feasibly be used by school districts conducting asbestos detection programs as a screening method to reduce analytical costs. Only 13.5% of the samples tested were negative, indicating that the samples did not contain asbestos. Of the large number (85.5%) of positive samples, 59% actually contained asbestos as determined by polarized light microscopy. Because of the low number of samples which were negative, there was not a significant reduction of analytical costs. Also, because of the hazardous nature of the reagents involved in the test, the uncertainties in interpretation of the results, and waste disposal problems, it is not recommended that this test be used by school district personnel. Bulk samples collected from schools should be sent directly to a laboratory experienced in identifying asbestos by polarized light microscopy or another acceptable technique.
