Generation of Mt. St. Helens Dust with a Fluidizing Dust Generator

Abstract

A fluidizing dust generator was developed for the generation of dust atmospheres used in sampling equipment calibration or animal toxicology experiments. The regulated feed mechanism and cyclone action of the generator are examples of additions and improvements of this generator over previous models. The output dust aerosol produced by the fluidizing dust generator was tested for particle mass size distribution and output in relation to inlet air flow, feed brush speed, and time. The generator was found to be capable of producing high concentrations of dust with a high level of stability over time. Modifications in the feed mechanism and the reservoir size would allow lower concentrations to be produced over a longer period of time.
