A NOVEL SAMPLING METHOD FOR METHYL METHACRYLATE IN WORKPLACE AIR

Pages 773-775 | Published online: 04 Jun 2010

Abstract

NIOSH sampling method No. 2537 for methyl methacrylate involves passing a known amount of air through a sample tube containing Amberlite® XAD-2 resin. A sample tube containing 300 mg Anasorb® 727 in the front section and 150 mg in the backup section also has been evaluated for use in this method. This tube has passed three of the most important tests for an adsorbent sampling method, which are capacity, desorption efficiency, and storage stability. At 25°C and 80% relative humidity, the safe sample volume for a 200-ppm sample was 8.6 L. Desorption efficiency with carbon disulfide averaged 95.7%, and storage is possible for at least 2 weeks in a refrigerator without significant loss of sample. This sample tube, therefore, is offered as an alternative sampling method for methyl methacrylate in workplace air.
