1 Although most evident in the conflict between April and Gottfried, the question of idealism versus pragmatism is essentially what the other characters debate as well, whether the topic is sleeping with men (Ginny/Martha), making money (Bill/Tom), or seeking private medical care (April/Janet). That they are able to join forces when faced with a serious event suggests the position favored in the film is one of idealistic pragmatism or, if you like, pragmatic idealism.
