Health Information Needs of First-Year Students in Nigerian Universities: A Case Study of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife

Pages 201-210 | Published online: 07 Sep 2008

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to identify the health information needs of fresh students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Three hundred students were randomly selected. A questionnaire was used for data collection. The results of the survey showed that the students' health information needs were on emotional health, personal hygiene, mental health promotion, and reproductive health. Many of the students required information on reproductive health such as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), unwanted pregnancy, abortion, menstruation, and infertility. Their sources of information were hospitals/private clinics, friends, parents, relations, radio, and periodicals. Lack of awareness of current information materials and information communication technology (ICT) facilities in the library were among the constraints to effective information delivery. Suggestions for the improvement of health information services were proffered.
